It seems quite appropriate to celebrate John Bacon’s birthday on Memorial Day. While this holiday remembering the people who died while serving in US armed forces didn’t start until after the Civil War, we do use it now to also remember those who died in the American Revolution. John Bacon fits that description. But let’s start at his beginning.

Joanna Lyon (1690-1765)
Joanna Lyon was born on 26 May 1690 in Milton, Norfolk, Massachusetts as the second child of George Lyon and Thankful Badcock. She had three siblings, namely: Preserved, Hannah, and Silence. You may remember learning about Joanna’s mother Thankful back in February (see Happy Birthday Thankful Badcock!). Joanna’s father died when she was four years old. Thankful raised Joanna and her siblings for about seven years, but when she remarried, she had to hand the children over to their grandmother Hannah Tolman Lyon. So, from about age 11 onward, Joanna Lyon was raised by her grandmother.

Samuel Russell (1733-~1801)
Today is the 283rd anniversary of the birth of Samuel Russell. Born on 17 May 1733, he was already the third generation of his family to be born in America. Yes, our family definitely has some deep roots here. Samuel’s great-grandfather had been an immigrant from England as part of the Great Migration and his grandfather had moved the family from Massachusetts to Connecticut.

John Borden (1729-1801)
Two hundred and eighty-seven years ago, John Borden was born on 12 May 1729 in Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island as the second child of Thomas Borden and Mary Briggs. He had five siblings, namely: Job, Mary, Joseph, Sarah, and William.
When he was 17, he married Susanna Pearse, daughter of Richard Pearce VI and Susanna Lawton, on 16 Oct 1746 in Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island.

John Thomas Estes was born on 07 May 1856 in Steedman, Callaway, Missouri as the first child of William Riley Estes and Margaret A. O’Donnell. He had four siblings, namely: James H.B., Anna Eliza, Moses Patton Barnett, and Laura Alice.
He was sometimes known as J.T.
His mother died in about 1865 when he was around nine years old. His dad remarried to Sally Hill and had two more daughters, Ida and Augusta.

Selma Cornelia Aschbrenner was born on 07 May 1904 in Berlin, Marathon, Wisconsin, 112 years ago today. She was the first child of Frederick A Helmut Aschbrenner and Alice Rosalie Fehlhaber. She had one sibling, namely: Frederick Carl Aschbrenner. Sadly, Freddy died at age 27.
She was called Sally.
